Libeskind was born in Lodz, Poland, on May 12, 1946, the year after World War II (1939-45) ended. Libeskind's parents, Jews living under the dangerous regime of Nazi Germany, had separately fled Poland when the war began. After reaching the border of the Soviet Union, both were arrested by the Soviets.
